Ella: Brilliant BizTown

Brilliant BizTown

On Tuesday, January 23rd the fifth grade classes went to BizTown in St. Louis.  BizTown is a simulation of a community.  Each student is assigned a job in one of the BizTown businesses.  My job was the principal CEO of JA University.  We spent our time at work completing the tasks we were assigned.  For our work we were paid BizTown dollars that we could deposit into our checking accounts.  On our breaks we could spend our money at the BizTown businesses.  
The businesses and services at BizTown included: AT&T, Monsanto, Purina, Biz Mart, JA University, Children’s Hospital, City Hall, Professional Offices, Utilities, Warehouse, KJAR radio station, Tech Mahindra, Print Shop, Smokehouse Market, Mastercard, First Bank,  and KPLR 11 television station.  We learned what it is like to earn money and make decisions about how to spend it.  According to the fifth graders that voted, the favorite business to visit was the Smokehouse Market.  At the Smokehouse you could buy popcorn, drinks and cookies.  The cookies were delicious!  

Learning about our day at BizTown
CEO’s and CFO’s of the various businesses as well as other community members  gave speeches to everyone at BizTown.  The purpose of the first speeches were to promote the businesses.  CFO’s gave speeches at the end of the day to announce if their business was able to pay off their loan and if they made a profit.  All of the businesses ended up being successful.  It was one of my favorite field trips that I have ever attended.

The weather forecast for today is:      It will be a cloudy day with a chance of bacon a nd raining soda. The temperature going to be 34* out and watch out chocolate puddles, the ground is going to be frozen popsicles.  Make sure you wear a coat,  rain boots and an umbella. Be very careful because you don't want to step in th e chocolate.   You might get some luck,  it’s  supposed to become a little warm . Be careful you don't want to get hit by  bacon do you ? We will be having P.E and we are going to be playing 4 square volleyball, I wonder who is going to win ? In science, we learned about matters. It is really fun because we got to guess what we thought were in the cups.

Kayliana: Weekly Update

Weekly Update Written By: Kayliana Harris Here is a quick recap of things we have been doing throughout this week. Writing: In writing we have been working on a piece about colonial times. Each student was assigned to a specific job in colonial times. Then, we researched our job and found out as much information as possible on colonial times. We wrote and typed our body paragraphs. Recently, we have been brainstorming ideas for our introduction paragraph. We have not yet wrote it but we are very close. That is what we have been doing in writing. Math : In math we have been working hard on fractions. We have learned how to make an equivalent fraction, simplify a fraction, and how to change an improper fraction into a mixed number (and the other way around).
