Brooke: New Additions to the Bess Family

Image
Bess Family party of 5… I mean, 8! Thats right we have added some new additions to the Bess Family! Meet Wicket… Wicket is a chi mix (chihuahua mix) and is the cutest friendliest dog ever! He’s 12-13 weeks old but plenty playful! Wicket enjoys curling up on your lap and snuggling with his toy ewok. How did he get the name Wicket?... STAR WARS! If you know me,  my family loves  STAR WARS and Wicket is a small Ewok from STAR WARS (teddy-bear looking creatures) Next in line for his name was Chewbacca (Chewy) a wookie, but that turned out to be his middle name!...His full name is..Wicket Chewbacca Bess! We met Wicket at petsmart but he was born at Second Chance. We adopted Wicket on April 9th 2016 . Meet Rey…   Rey is just a kitten but that does NOT mean she isn't tough! Rey is (like Wicket) 12-13 weeks old and is the most active kitten with her brother BB-8. Like Wicket Rey was named after the main girl in STAR WARS THE FORCE AWAKENS.  Rey loves to ...

Connor: Soccer Tournament Recap

Image
For my kids corner post I’m going to inform you of the soccer tournament I just played in. I play for Synergy Sports, and last weekend we played in Springfield, Missouri. In our first game we played the #1 team in Arkansas and lost 3-1 :(. That team was in light blue and had a big Clorox logo on the front of their jerseys, so we called them clorox. My coach got pretty mad at the ref in that game because we got a free kick and scored, but then the ref called it offsides. After we scored! And it wasn’t even offsides! In the second game we played a neon green team and lost 2-1 :(. But later that team beat clorox in triple overtime, then beat the Magic in the championship. In our third game we finally won 4-0. It should have been 5-0 because I scored. However after the play was over the stinking ref called it a hand ball on ME even though the ball didn’t touch any part my hand or arm. Throughout the tournament I mainly played forward. We were placed in the gold division and held up fair...

Tucker: My Spring Break

Image
My spring break My spring break was pretty interesting. My family and two other families that we are good friends with went on the trip. First we went to New Orleans Louisiana. It was a twelve hour drive and we got up at 2:00 in the morning, but it was totally worth it. We then got to our hotel, unpacked, and visited New Orleans. We were on the famous “Bourbon Street”. Then on sunday we visited New Orleans and took part in a New Orleans parade. On monday we boarded the Carnival Elation cruise ship at about 1:00 PM. We then investigated the cruise ship while we were floating the Louisiana river. At about 9:00 to 10:00 that night we finally got to the ocean. Tuesday was a day at sea( which means we wouldn’t stop at any islands that day and we would be in the middle of the ocean the whole day).Me and my buddy Austin got up at 7:00 AM that morning and went and jogged on the track. We also went and played basketball then ate breakfast at the buffet. That day we just played around o...

Sam: Spring Break Recap

Image
Information of my Spring Break Hi everyone! For my spring break, I went to Gulf Shores, Alabama and had a lot of fun so I decided to write a blog about what I did there and what you could do there if you went, too. The first day I was there we basically hung out on the beach all day which was pretty fun. Usually beaches are pretty crowded but what we did, and what you could do to avoid lots of people, is rent a condo or small house on the beach. It is basically the same price as a hotel on the beach but you get more, like a full kitchen for what you would be paying for half that at a decent hotel. For the second day we were there, we were at the beach all morning and then went to a place called Papa Rocco’s for some pizza. After that, we went right across the road for some of the best ice cream I’ve had in a while, from a place called Scoops . On the third day, and I think you’ve guessed it, we hang out at the beach in the morning, like we did everyday to avoid the ...

Mackenzie: Weekend in Bloom

Image
A Weekend in BLOOM         By: Mackenzie #15 On saturday me, my mom, and my sister and baby brother went to the the ART IN BLOOM exhibit at the Art and Archeology Museum. At first we went upstairs and made bouquets out of some flowers that the exhibit had set up for an activity, because most of this exhibit featured paintings of flowers or of paintings that included flowers. Next we went down to the gallery and looked at the sculptures that had been made almost all out of flowers! It was amazing, and very interesting. On Sunday it was the first day of spring, and it was my sister’s 12th birthday, and in a few hours we were going to St. Louis to celebrate my Great Grandfather’s 80th birthday party. It took a long time, and my brother got very crabby, but it was a nice birthday, and even I got some presents. At the end, when we went home, we bought Andie’s ice cream, for my sister’s birthday treat, and she opened a few presents. Over...

Nate: Paintball Birthday Party

Image
PaintBall This past weekend I got to go to Jake Downey’s birthday party. We went to this paintball place called Battlecreek. When we got there we all got our guns and masks and they told us the rules and one of them was if you got in a fight then the refs would just shoot you until you stopped. Our first game was one team verse another team and we lost then we did the same thing and we won. And I got hit in the mask but I think that is the best spot to get hit because you don't feel it.Then we went to another place called the high lands and we had to walk a half mile just to get to it. When we started it was bad because there were so many thorns and then you would only get out when you ran out of ammo so I got shoot like 5 times. I could not wait to be done with that round.   Then we went to eat lunch. Jake's mom made us hot dogs and they were so good I had three! I also had some Doritos, fruit punch and oreos. After we finished eating, we went to the good battle...

Jacob: Bobcat Basketball Tournaments

Image
Bobcat Basketball Tournaments I’m on a 5th grade competitive basketball team called the Columbia Bobcats.  Several other kids from our school and other Columbia schools are on the team.  Last week we had a tournament in Lebanon, MO, which is a two hour drive from Columbia.  There were four teams in the tournament: us (the Bobcats), the Cobras, a team called Licking, and a team called the Yellow Jackets (they’re from Lebanon).  Anyway, we played the Cobras first.  I don’t know why, but I’m always so tense before the game, so when Ty (our point guard) did a handoff to me of course I drop the ball and they went and scored a layup.  “Great start JACOB!” I thought in my head.  I did not have a great game.  I only scored six points, but Ty had a really good game, and we beat the Cobras 35-15.  Ok, one down two to go.  Next we played Licking.  There’s not much to say about this game because we won 44-0!  So the next game wa...

Hannah B: Furry Friends Forever!

Image
Furry Friends Forever! by Hannah Beran Why hello there! If you love an adventure, come along with me! I have lots of friends and you will too, once you come visit the Humane Society! I go there once a week and you won't belive how many sweet, loving animals they have there. When people do come to adopt, they mainly look at the kittens and the puppies. Yes, I know that they are cute and stuff, but nobody really looks at the older dogs or cats. But when you go there, you will see that the older dogs and cats are just as cute and loving, as the kittens and puppies are.  Let me tell you how many animals got adopted in 2015: 1,088 kitty cats, 1,107 dogs, and 97 small animals such as bunnies, guinea pigs, birds, snakes, etc.  And 244 animals got back to their families and back to their homes. As well as, 242 animals were sent to rescue all over the United States. Wow, that's a lot! Additionally, 34 feral cats were released.  Percentage-wise, that would be a 92% l...

Sam: Volunteering at the Food Bank

Image
Volunteering at the Food Bank By: Sam Schwarz Introduction Have you ever had a weekend where you were just sitting around, with absolutely nothing to do? Do you get joy by helping people? Well with the food bank, you can solve you boring day and help others while doing it! You will help prepare food for people who need it and have fun. My Experience I have been to the food bank a few times in my life. Once when I was there, I helped pack macaroni into bags for people. It was a very fun experience. They have you go to a table with 4 to a table and work in an assembly line. With me, they had one person hold a bag while another filled it with macaroni, then pass it on so another person can staple the bag shut and  tie a recipe on. There are all kinds of other things  they have you do though. My dad said that once, he had to rebag hot dogs. If you're interested in volunteering, go to this link to find out more about it:    http://sharefoodbringhope.org...

Annie: The Coolest Plane Ever!

Image
The coolest plane ever!!! Hi everyone! Hope you had an AWESOME break. On my break I got to see my uncle Eric who flies planes. He took me and my family to see the plane he flies. A Gulfstream V. Now let me tell you about my time there. When we walked in the plane it didn’t look like a normal plane. There were only like 12 seats and some tables. Also there was a kitchen in the back of the plane, and every seat had its own tv screen! But where the pilots sat it was much cooler. There was this piece of glass that when you look into it things about the flight come up! There were a lot of buttons and switches. All in all I had an amazing time on the tour. Here are some pictures. Me in the pilot's seat The view The cabin The infrared glass The candy stash The kitchen Me and the best pilot in the world Me and my little brother holding up the wing

Hannah L.: Thanksgiving Break and Hilarious Stories

Image
I thought about it for a while, then decided I would tell you about                       My Thanksgiving Break!!! The highlights of my Thanksgiving were: I got to make TWO gingerbread houses, one with my mom’s side cousins, in Liberty:    And one with my dad’s side cousins, in Chillicothe:   Also, I got to have TWO Thanksgiving meals, again, one with my mom’s side, and one with my dad’s. Those were the awesome things this Thanksgiving, but HERE are two                  HILARIOUS Stories!!! 1. It was a normal Saturday in Chillicothe, and we were going swimming at the Y. (Yes, I know that sounds weird-swimming in winter, but every Thanksgiving we go swimming in my Uncle Greg’s indoor pool, and this year we couldn’t because he and my Aunt Jenni...
