Kayla: Great Grammie's Sugar Cookies

Image
By: Kayla Mooney Great Grammie’s homemade sugar Cookies! Mix these ingredients together: 2 eggs   1 teaspoon of cream of tartar 1 cup of oil   1 teaspoon of baking soda 1 cup of powdered sugar   1 cup of butter 1 teaspoon of salt   1 cup of sugar 1 teaspoon of vanilla   4 cups of flour Scoop onto a cookie sheet then sprinkle sugar on top. Bake 10 minutes at 350 degrees. The reason I chose to do these sugar cookies is because they taste good and I never got to meet my Great Grammie, and I wanted to do something that involved her. These cookies are yummy and they are fun to make. Especially if you make them with an awesome sidekick!    (Thanks Noel!) My Great Grammie lived on a ranch in Nebraska and she and the other ranchers’ wives made food for all of the cowboys who lived around her and helped them with cattle. This was one of the many many recipes of hers that they all LOVED!!

Kayliana: Weekly Update

Weekly Update Written By: Kayliana Harris Here is a quick recap of things we have been doing throughout this week. Writing: In writing we have been working on a piece about colonial times. Each student was assigned to a specific job in colonial times. Then, we researched our job and found out as much information as possible on colonial times. We wrote and typed our body paragraphs. Recently, we have been brainstorming ideas for our introduction paragraph. We have not yet wrote it but we are very close. That is what we have been doing in writing. Math : In math we have been working hard on fractions. We have learned how to make an equivalent fraction, simplify a fraction, and how to change an improper fraction into a mixed number (and the other way around). Most recently we have learned how to add and subtract fractions. That is what we are currently doing in math. Social Studies: In social studies we have been learning about colonial times. We are doing a colony simu...

Connor: Interviews with Mizzou Athletes

For my Kids' Corner post, I interviewed two elite Mizzou track and field athletes. The reason I chose this is because my goal is to run in college, and I wanted to find out what it takes to get there. First I interviewed Kaitlyn Fischer an all American in the 10k. Then I interviewed  Will Crocker, he was second in the 1500 at the SEC meet. Will’s best mile is 4:01! Question number 1) Why did you chose Mizzou? Kaitlyn: “I chose Mizzou because I felt most at home here when I was visiting other colleges. The athletic and academic departments are great. Also, the future teammates I was about to have welcomed me with open arms”. Will: “I chose Mizzou because of the top of the line facilities and because they were the only big division school in the country that gave me a chance.” Question number 2) What is the best part about being in Mizzou athletics? Kaitlyn: “The best part about being in Mizzou athletics is that no matter what, you have people everywhere you go wanting a...

Bradley: Video Game Review

My review of Batman Arkham Knight by:Bradley Frueh Ok so there is a game I love playing called Batman Arkham Knight. It’s good I would give it a 10/10 but it’s about you are Batman (obviously) and Scarecrow has came back. With his fear toxin to take over Gotham City. But Scarecrow is also working with the Arkham Knight and he knows everything about Batman, how you might ask? Well later in the game he crushes you’re batmobile but then you go to Gordon to free him. But Arkham Knight starts saying “You think you're  cool”. Then Batman says “Who are you and why do you know all my moves” then Arkham Knight says “You really don't remember do you Bruce”. Then Arkham Knight takes off his helmet to reveal Jason Todd. He used to be Batman’s sidekick until Batman forgot him in Arkham Asylum. Ok, but you do get a batmobile and you then can turn it into a tank. You can buy skins for it or some are free and the same thing with Batman’s suit so I would say if you're considering ge...

Jacob: Bobcat Basketball Tournaments

Image
Bobcat Basketball Tournaments I’m on a 5th grade competitive basketball team called the Columbia Bobcats.  Several other kids from our school and other Columbia schools are on the team.  Last week we had a tournament in Lebanon, MO, which is a two hour drive from Columbia.  There were four teams in the tournament: us (the Bobcats), the Cobras, a team called Licking, and a team called the Yellow Jackets (they’re from Lebanon).  Anyway, we played the Cobras first.  I don’t know why, but I’m always so tense before the game, so when Ty (our point guard) did a handoff to me of course I drop the ball and they went and scored a layup.  “Great start JACOB!” I thought in my head.  I did not have a great game.  I only scored six points, but Ty had a really good game, and we beat the Cobras 35-15.  Ok, one down two to go.  Next we played Licking.  There’s not much to say about this game because we won 44-0!  So the next game wa...

Hannah B: Furry Friends Forever!

Image
Furry Friends Forever! by Hannah Beran Why hello there! If you love an adventure, come along with me! I have lots of friends and you will too, once you come visit the Humane Society! I go there once a week and you won't belive how many sweet, loving animals they have there. When people do come to adopt, they mainly look at the kittens and the puppies. Yes, I know that they are cute and stuff, but nobody really looks at the older dogs or cats. But when you go there, you will see that the older dogs and cats are just as cute and loving, as the kittens and puppies are.  Let me tell you how many animals got adopted in 2015: 1,088 kitty cats, 1,107 dogs, and 97 small animals such as bunnies, guinea pigs, birds, snakes, etc.  And 244 animals got back to their families and back to their homes. As well as, 242 animals were sent to rescue all over the United States. Wow, that's a lot! Additionally, 34 feral cats were released.  Percentage-wise, that would be a 92% l...

Kid News

A few of our students asked me if they could create their own writing and activity pages for our class. I figured our Kids' Corner blog would be the perfect place to feature their work! Check out the Kid News tab at the top of our Kids' Corner Blog. Students, if you're interested in contributing to Kid News, contact Julia, Brooke, or Annie!
